The final section is a delight, especially after the dusty trails of the previous day. The path wends its way around a flat but rocky coast, offering many opportunities for a swim in the inviting waters. The rock is a deep, earthy red which contrasts with the striking blue of the ocean. The further you get from La Tonnara, the wilder the coast.

It's worth making the detour to the bay opposite the Ile de Fazzio, a secluded and highly attractive cove where you can swim out to the island. From there, the path rises to the top of limestone cliffs, down which stalagtites droop. On rounding the Phare a Madonetta, the fortress city of Bonifacio is well seen above the cliffs. The city makes a fascinating place to wander when you return to the city after completing the journey, A set of stairs drop down from the town to the ocean - the Staircase of King Aragon.

Our journey is not yet done, however. A path leads easily along the cliff top to Capo Pertusato, where a final promontory juts into tthe ocean opposite Sardinia. Go down to the beach and join the fish in swimming out to the end of the promontory. This is as far South as you can possibly go!
