Section 12 - Vizzavona to Refuge de Prati, 25.7 km, 2405 m +

The GR20 takes a long traversing route through forests to reach the Col de Verde.  In place of this, an alternative high-level route can be followed starting at the Col de Vizzavona.  A marked track rises through the forest to the Northwest ridge of Punta dell Oriente. A straightforward scramble overcomes the summit rocks to gain the summit of what proves to be a highly attractive mountain.  You need to descend the same way for 200m in altitude until a scanty trail traversess South beneath the pinnacles of the Pinzi Corbini.

The pinnacles of the Pinzi Corbini

The way is wild and spectacular, but although it is broken, it leads without particular difficulty to a col to the South of Point 2052.  From here, a small path leads down to the Ruisseau de Tomba. Instead of descending to the ski station, it is possible to traverse upwards toward Point 2155 where the broad stony ridge leads without difficulty to Monte Renoso.

The moonscape of Monte Renoso

This is a moonlike landscape of white rock and sparse vegetation. The Southeast ridge is taken to the Col de Pruno and thence the Bergeries des Pozzi, before a good trail descends toward the Col de Verde and the GR20. Refreshment can be taken here before re-ascending through forest to reach the bare slopes above and the Refuge de Prati, a notoriously cold and cloudy spot.
